What we do

Our breast service is an outpatient service that looks after patients with disorders ranging from breast cancers that require immediate surgery to non-cancerous conditions such as:

  • fibrocystic disease –  changes in the breast tissue causes it to become dense or “lumpy”
  • fibroadenomas – benign tumours of the breast tissue
  • cysts – fluid-filled sacs
  • breast infections

The Breast Screening for the Wellington region is led by Hutt Valley DHB, but screening is available at Wellington Regional Hospital. Find out more about screening.

Assessment

When you come in for an appointment, we’ll assess your symptoms, often taking a mammogram or ultrasound scan.

Sometimes, we’ll need to remove of a small amount of tissue from the breast for examination under a microscope.

Treatment

Surgeons on our team will work with you if you require surgery or treatment for breast cancer.

However, many breast conditions do not require surgery and we will work with other specialists to find out the best treatment plan for you.
