After a short spell as house surgeon in Dunedin, Frank served with the NZMC in the Middle East and Italy 1941 - 1945.  He was then appointed to the Medical Unit, Dunedin Hospital 1946 - 1949 before embarking on PG studies in London and Edinburgh between 1950 and 1952.

Frank was appointed Visiting Physician, Wellington Hospital in 1954 and Visiting Physician, Cardiology and Hypertension Clinic in 1956.   He held both these appointments until 1971.  The Cardiology appointment was limited to one ECG reporting session / week.

Frank was the first Dean, Wellington Clinical School of Medicine, from 1971 - 1975.
