Commitment to education

Wellington and Hutt Hospitals are both teaching hospitals for midwives, nurses and doctors alike. Wellington Regional Hospital houses University of Otago Medical School and Victoria University Midwifery on campus, and both hospitals have close relationships with these schools and Te Herenga Waka Otago Polytechnic School of Midwifery’s satellite programme.

The maternity unit is lively with midwifery and medical undergraduates, and is supportive of post-graduate studies. Fifty-four-week comprehensive graduate midwifery programmes are offered at both Wellington Regional and Hutt Hospitals for eligible new practitioners wanting to experience the full scope of midwifery in a supportive environment.

In-house there are dedicated midwifery educators and midwifery clinical coaches to ensure the staff are confident working across the scope and are up to date with the latest practice.

Midwifery educators facilitate all education requirements mandated by Te Whatu Ora Health NZ and the New Zealand Midwifery Council for staff and lead maternity carers, as well as supporting and facilitating optional education and professional development opportunities.

If you are interested in attending a midwifery education day you can apply now:

Some education days are also accessible to healthcare providers from outside of the region. Please contact our midwifery education team at: (Wellington) or Ko Awatea (Hutt Valley) if you wish to apply.
