Phil first tasted cardiology when he was HP on the cardiology run at Wellington Hospital in 1990.   After periods as a Medical and Respiratory Registrar at the hospital, Phil joined Cardiology again as Registrar in 1992, and remained there until 1995.
He then travelled to Temple University Hospital, Philadelphia, USA on a National Heart Foundation of NZ training fellowship.   At Temple, Phil was Interventional and Invasive Cardiology Fellow, and completed a Fellowship in Advanced Adult Interventional Cardiology.

He returned to Wellington in 1997, and was for five months Senior Cardiology Registrar, before being appointed Interventional Cardiologist in January 1998.

In addition to being skilled in all forms of percutaneous intervention for coronary disease, Phil has established a regional service for balloon mitral valvuloplasty, undertakes balloon aortic valvuloplasty, and has established an ASD/PFO closure service.
He is actively involved in pacemaker implantation and follow-up.
