Mark's involvement in cardiology began with a 6 month attachment as Cardiology Registrar, Wellington Hospital in 1987.
He then went to the UK, where he was Cardiology Registrar, Harefield Hospital, Middlesex and Research Fellow at the National Heart and Lung Institute, 1988 - 1990.  There followed a period as Paediatric Cardiology Registrar at Harefield Hospital, 1990 - 1991.

Mark returned to NZ to the position of Cardiology Registrar, Dunedin Hospital, 1991 - 1993.
He was appointed Cardiologist, Dunedin Hospital and Emily Johnson Research Fellow, Otago Medical School in 1993, positions he held through 1994.

Mark came to Wellington in 1995 to take up the position of Cardiologist, Wellington Hospital, and from 2000-2017 he was Clinical Leader, Cardiology Department.

He has been very active in the field of percutaneous coronary intervention.
