Domino Midwives

Domino Midwives Dominos are a group of midwives who share similar views and beliefs about birth. The Midwifery Service provided by the Domino Midwives is based on the strong belief that pregnancy, labour and childbirth are normal life events for most pregnant people. The midwives encourage pregnant people to choose a natural approach unless there are clinical issues indicating otherwise. Support and trust in pregnant people are essential elements of our practice and we work to achieve the best possible outcome for you and your family. Choice and our commitment to safety temper our practice. We specialise in waterbirth and homebirth, so give priority to those wishing to have these options. Kenepuru Birth Unit is also a choice that we can offer. A few of our midwives also offer acupuncture within their practice.

Penina Fitisemanu - Pasefika Midwifery Services for Pasefika and Maori women

Talofa lava, Bula Vinaka, Malo e lelei, Kia Orana, Fakaalofa atu, Kia Ora!

My name is Penina Fitisemanu and I am currently the only Pasefika Midwife who works in the Wellington Central and suburban areas of the CCDHB catchment region. I am of Samoan and Swiss descent.

I have been a Midwife for 25 years and also trained as a Registered Nurse.

My services are offered to Pasefika and Maori women only, to offer an alternate cultural choice when looking for Midwifery care by a Pasefika provider.

Website peninamidwifewellington.co.nz

As a Pasefika woman I value language, culture, family, faith, customs and traditions which are the foundations of who I am. As a Midwife I bring these values with me when I care for women from not only a Samoan background but also different Pasefika nations and Maori.

I acknowledge Pasefika and Maori women are uniquely different but intimately understand we share very similar cultural beliefs. I believe by offering a culturally appropriate service this will provide the highest satisfaction, access and equitable care for both Pasefika and Maori Women as consumers of maternity care.

I recognise Maori as Tangata Whenua and the importance of Te Tiriti O Waitangi as an essential component for healthcare provision.

I can take up to 6 women per month and early enquiries are encouraged via email.

I work in a group setting for backup, provide Continuity of Care as the model of Midwifery care and facilitate births at Wellington Regional Hospital. Ia manuia

Support in finding a midwife

LMC midwives for Wellington, Porirua and Kapiti

Your LMC can be a midwife or a specialist obstetrician who is responsible for your maternity care throughout your pregnancy, birth and after the birth of your baby. You may register with an LMC as soon as you become pregnant.

You may also receive first trimester care (up until the 12th week of pregnancy) including arranging blood tests and scans from a GP.

The Ministry of Health's HealthEd website provides further information about choosing a LMC.

If you are unable to find an LMC midwife after contacting midwives yourself:

Fill in the form on our contact page via this link contact us via our online form or leave a message on 0800 Find MW (0800 346 369).

If there is no LMC midwives available we can refer you to the Community Midwifery Team (CMT) at Wellington Hospital

Community Midwifery Team (CMT)

The CMT team provides complete pregnancy care for people who are unable to access a Lead Maternity Carer (LMC). The intrapartum (labour and birth) care is provided by the core midwives working in the Wellington Hospital Birthing Suite.

The team provides ongoing midwifery care for those women who need consultant obstetrician secondary or tertiary level maternity care. These women will be receiving care from Maternal Fetal Medicine (MFM), antenatal diabetic, or one of the specialist antenatal clinic teams.

What midwives offer

The Ministry of Health's HealthEd website (https://www.healthed.govt.nz/) lists the things your LMC will do:

  • Take responsibility for your care throughout your pregnancy, labour and birth, and for you and your baby’s care until 4 to 6 weeks after your baby is born.
  • Provide you with information to help you make choices about your care.
  • Provide you with free maternity care if you are eligible (unless your LMC is a private obstetrician.
  • Refer you or your baby to a specialist if it becomes necessary.
  • Develop a plan with you for your care, including your labour and the birth.
  • Be with you during your labour and the birth.
  • Visit you at home after the birth.
  • Refer you to your chosen Well Child provider at a time agreed by you. This will be by 4 weeks after the birth of your baby.
  • Provide a written note to your GP before discharging you from their care.

Eligibility for free health care

The New Zealand government sets the eligibility criteria for funding for health and disability services, including maternity care. There are a number of groups who meet eligibility criteria, including New Zealand citizens and permanent residents, Australian citizens and permanent residents who have lived or intend to live in New Zealand for 2 years or more and children of eligible people.
