Fellow, Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Centre, Seattle, Washington, USA.  It was there that he was exposed to the new and developing discipline of bone marrow transplantation.

On his return to Wellington Hospital he set up the blood and marrow transplant unit and the regional haemophilia centre.  He was involved in the setting up of the New Zealand Blood Service and the NZ Bone Marrow Transplant Registry.

He was appointed Clinical Leader, Haematology at Wellington Hospital in the mid-1990s, a position he held until 2018.  

He was an outstanding teacher and was regularly awarded the best lecturer award at the Wellington Clinical School.  He was an active researcher, based in the Malaghan Institute, of which he was deputy chair.
