Educated at Nelson College

As a final-year medical student, he was employed as a HP on the tuberculosis wards at Wellington Hospital, and soon after leaving this posting, he developed symptoms of pulmonary tuberculosis. The next five years were disrupted by treatment for pulmonary tuberculosis.
