Statement from Health New Zealand | Te Whatu Ora Capital, Coast & Hutt Valley Group Director Operations Hospital & Specialist Services Jamie Duncan

Patients, whānau, visitors, and staff are now in the process of being returned to Te Wao Nui.

Fire and Emergency New Zealand (FENZ) has advised that it found no evidence of a fire or gas leak, and has allowed us to return to the building and resume the delivery of services. Work continues to determine what may set our systems off, however FENZ has assured us that the building is safe.

As Te Wao Nui was evacuated as soon as staff were alerted we can confirm that there was no risk at any time to patients, whānau, visitors or staff. We recognise, however, that this experience may have been distressing for some people and we empathise with that.

As well as returning to the building, we are working to reschedule any deferred appointments for the next available time and apologise for any inconvenience people may experience.
