Health Workforce New Zealand (HWNZ) works on initiatives aimed at developing a workforce capable of supporting the delivery of health targets. HWNZ and Capital and Coast District Health Board (CCDHB) are working together to provide training support/opportunities for the non-regulated workforce to develop formal competencies in their current roles, and develop their potential to move into other health sectors as relevant. 

Non-regulated workforce are able to attain certificates, diplomas and graduate diplomas and the levels of training range from Levels 2 to 7* on the New Zealand Qualifications Authority (NZQA) framework. There are criteria and requirements for all applications to do Level 7* training. The outcome of these applications will be determined by HWNZ.

Other funding opportunities exist for degrees, and masters papers which is why these training programmes are not eligible for funding support by the Hauora Māori Training Fund. 

This Hauora Māori Training Fund is contracted to CCDHB's Māori Health Development Group, and is coordinated within Whānau Care Services.

  • I am an employee of CCDHB, or a health and/or disability service that is either funded by CCDHB or the Ministry of Health
  • I can demonstrate a commitment to/or competence in Māori health
  • I can whakapapa and/or have cultural links with Te Ao Māori and Māori communities
  • I'm a New Zealand citizen or hold a New Zealand permanent residency permit
  • My current employer supports and endorses my application
  • I meet the entry criteria required by the Tertiary Education Provider

Hauora Māori Training Fund provides support with:

  • Tuition fees* via a tax invoice from the Tertiary Education Provider. There is a limit to this amount.
  • Travel* subsidy which is to be clearly indicated on your application form. This subsidy is only available if you are required to travel further than 50kms by road one-way from your usual place of work to the agreed compulsory training programme.
  • Accommodation* subsidy which is to be clearly indicated on your application form. This subsidy supports your cost for accommodation required at the agreed training programme location.
  • Backfill* is the reasonable and actual cost (per hour) of replacing the trainee while the trainee attends the compulsory aspects of their training programmes during the trainee's rostered working hours.
  • Course related resources* are for actual costs up to a maximum of $500 per trainee and must be clearly indicated on your application form. This process requires the Hauora Māori Training Fund Coordinator to purchase text book(s) on your behalf. You must provide a recommended reading list from your training provider plus details of the bookstore.

This training fund excludes applicants:

  • who already receive funding from the Ministry of Health for the same training programme.
  • who are studying in a programme not approved by NZQA
  • who are already in a sponsored study programme for 2017
  • who are studying for degrees or masters programmes
