From Wednesday 17 October, construction work will begin on Metlink’s Newtown bus hub outside Wellington Regional Hospital. The work is being carried out by Higgins Contractors and is expected to take six weeks to complete.
While construction is underway, the footpath area between the exit from the hospital’s underground carpark and the hospital’s entrance steps will be closed to public access (see attached map). The 12 existing P60 carparks in this area will also be removed permanently to make way for the bus hub.
All southbound traffic in this construction area will move down to one lane and pedestrians will be diverted around the footpath through a barricaded area.
Pedestrian access to the hospital entrance will be via the barricaded roadway or the hospital ramp to the left of the building.
Metlink bus services are currently operating out of two temporary stops on the hospital side of Riddiford Street. The stop on the other side of the road has remained in its current location outside Ronald McDonald House.
The new Metlink bus hub is expected to be in operation by early November. Higgins Construction have said they will do their best to minimise disruption with these temporary arrangements. If you have any questions about this work, please contact Miki Schmidt at M.Schmidt@higgins.co.nz
