Capital & Coast District Health Board (CCDHB) is trialling a Kenepuru Hospital shuttle connection to and from the Porirua railway station.

The shuttle connection is for Kapiti residents without independent transport travelling to and from appointments at Kenepuru Community Hospital or Wellington Regional Hospital. The service will be available from 5 June 2018.

CCDHB recognise it is important to support Kapiti to access hospital appointments. This is one initiative that we are looking at to improve transport options for Kapiti residents travelling to and from our hospitals. In the long term, we aim to reduce the requirement for people to travel for appointments through increased access to services within the Kapiti region.

Bookings are essential and need to be made a minimum of 24 hours prior to the appointment, as spaces are limited and the shuttle will only operate if there are passengers booked. Bookings can be made via the DHB’s Transport Office on 04 806 2708 or by emailing shuttle.booking@ccdhb.org.nz

The Kenepuru Hospital shuttle connection will depart the station hourly, at a quarter to the hour, from Station Road East (through the underpass to the city side where buses depart) between 7am and 6pm every weekday. It will bring users back to Porirua railway station after their appointment.

The connection shuttle’s departure time from Porirua station is timed to connect with the Kenepuru Community Hospital and Wellington Regional Hospital shuttle service and is linked to the Kapiti train timetable.

For more information contact the CCDHB transport office on 04 806 2708.

Accompanying FAQs

What is the purpose of the Kenepuru Hospital connection shuttle trial?

Capital & Coast District Health Board (CCDHB) wants to ascertain whether a Kenepuru Hospital connection shuttle service is a long-term sustainable option for Kapiti residents travelling to and from appointments at Kenepuru Community Hospital and Wellington Regional Hospital.

We’re trialling the service to determine the feasibility of offering a permanent connection shuttle to and from the Porirua railway station that meets the existing shuttle service between the hospitals.

We know Kapiti residents do not have access to a regular and funded shuttle service for hospital appointments at Kenepuru Community Hospital and Wellington Regional Hospital. This is one initiative that we are looking at to improve access to transport options for Kapiti residents travelling to and from our hospitals.

How do people book to use this service?

Bookings are essential and can be made via the Transport Office, as per the current process. Bookings will need to be made a minimum of 24 hours prior to the appointment, as spaces are limited and the shuttle will only operate if there are passengers booked. Phone 04 806 2708 or email shuttle.booking@ccdhb.org.nz.

Office hours are 7.30am to 4.30pm.

How do I connect with the express shuttle from the train?

The Kenepuru Hospital shuttle connection will operate from 7am to 6pm every weekday. It will depart Porirua railway station hourly, at a quarter to the hour, from Station Road East (through the underpass to the city side where buses depart).  It will bring users back to the station after their appointment.

The connection shuttle’s departure time from Porirua station is timed to connect with the Kenepuru Community Hospital and Wellington Regional Hospital shuttle service and is linked to the Kapiti train timetable.

Why do I need to book 24 hours in advance?

The Kenepuru Hospital shuttle connection can take three passengers per journey, so it’s important that users book the service in advance to ensure we can accommodate you. The shuttle will be departing hourly from Porirua railway station (provided there are advanced bookings) and will make up to ten round trips every day. The shuttle connection will only be activated if a booking has been made.

The connection shuttle will meet the shuttle that runs between Kenepuru Community Hospital and Wellington Regional Hospital. This shuttle has a 12 person limit and also caters for Kapiti people who have driven to Kenepuru Community Hospital to link with the shuttle and people in the Porirua region travelling between the hospitals. Advance bookings allow us to co-ordinate these two transport options and ensure we are catering to everyone effectively.

What if my train is late arriving?

There will be some flexibility for the connection shuttle to wait if your train is delayed by 5-10 minutes. If you are going to be delayed for longer than this then you should ring the transport office on 04 806 2708 and talk to them about what needs to happen next.

How long will the Kenepuru Hospital shuttle connection be available?

The connection shuttle is being trialled for six months – between 5 June and 5 December.

If there is an over-capacity on a regular basis then CCDHB will review the options available for use.

We will be looking at the usage of the express shuttle during this time to determine whether it could be a feasible long-term travel option for Kapiti residents travelling to Kenepuru Community Hospital or Wellington Regional Hospital.

This initiative is part of a range of initiatives that CCDHB are exploring, alongside the Kapiti Coast District Council and the Kapiti Health Advocacy Group, to respond to the travel and healthcare needs of Kapiti residents.
