The first cardiology department registrar posting was made in 1961. Cathel McLeod was a senior registrar who introduced new techniques in the cardiac catheterisation laboratory.
For a number of years, many registrars who elected to do the cardiology run did so to gain general medical experience, though others saw the opportunity to map out a career in cardiology.
The number of registrar positions at any one time gradually increased as the department workload increased.
With the advent of RACP advanced training programmes, there was a trend towards vocational registrars outnumbering those not intending to specialise in cardiology, though there was generally at least one attachment available for non-vocational registrars.
Over the years, registrars have contributed enormously to the provision of cardiology services at Wellington Hospital.
A good number of registrars went on to pursue a successful career in cardiology.

CARDIAC FELLOWS
Since 2010, Fellowship positions have been made available for experienced cardiology trainees to get specific additional training in either interventional cardiology or cardiac rhythm management.
The foundation Interventional Fellow was Michael Zhang and the foundation CRM Fellow was David Wilson.
Ian Webb is the current Interventional Fellow, and Rob McIntosh is CRM Fellow.
