Tumai mo te Iwi (“Tumai”) PHO

Tumai is a not-for-profit charitable trust that brings together a number of groups who are all individually committed to better health for the people of Porirua, Linden and Tawa. It brings together:

  • Ngati Tama
  • Vai Ola
  • Te Roopu Awhina
  • WIPA and ten general practices
  • Local community

The role of Tumai’s board is to oversee the setting of policy, provide direction to management and monitor progress and performance. The Board meet monthly and meetings are open to the public. Members of the Board include:

  • Jane Shaw, Te Roopu Awhina representative
  • Dr Kevin Fitzsimons, general practice representative
  • Karewa Arthur, Ngati Tama representative
  • Dr Logan McLennan, general practice representative
  • Helen Griffith, community representative
  • Marama Parore-Katene, Ngati Tama representative
  • Maggie Simcox, nursing community representative
  • Dr Margaret Southwick, Vai Ola representative

Tumai began as a PHO on 1 April 2003. Over the past year Tumai has implemented the following initiatives to respond to its communities’ needs:

  • Established a Services Committee
  • Community Discharge coordination
  • Physical Activity Educator
  • Well Health Promoter
  • Facilitation of Health Promotion at Kapi Mana Netball
    Access Registered Nurses (mobile)
  • Health Advocacy Service
  • Transport to Health Appointments
  • Participation in Creek-Feast 2004
  • Participation in Community Health Forum
  • Prescription Subsidy
  • Interpreter Service
  • Memorandum of understanding with Plunket
  • Implemented Care Plus for high-need patients with complex health needs
  • Links with Porirua Healthlinks

Tumai continues to provide, develop and implement many health initiatives within the Porirua, Tawa and Linden communities. Tumai works closely with many groups including providers of primary health care, Capital and Coast DHB, Porirua Healthlinks, Maori and Pacific social support agencies, community groups and government agencies to identify and target services needed within its communities.

Tumai serves approximately 45,000 people in these communities (including 14% Maori, and 12% Pacific peoples). This is over 80% of the local population.
