Priorities

Reducing health disparities between different groups of people is an important goal for C&C DHB. Key groups that have been identified for priority attention are Māori, Pacific people, people living on low incomes and marginalised groups such as refugees and people who are homeless.

Two key directions proposed in The Journey Forward plan are that mental health services should be primary care focused and recovery orientated.

The primary care focus is intended to ensure people can access and receive treatment and support that takes into account both their physical and mental health needs. It also recognises the current reality that 10 people who experience mental illness will seek help from primary care services for every person who seeks help from a Community Mental Health Team.

Recovery is a key concept in the development of effective and humane mental health services. The term recovery does not imply a life free of symptoms of mental illness; rather, recovery has been defined by the Mental Health Commission as “Living well in the presence or absence of mental illness”.
