The Thorndon Hospitals

Previous | Next

The Second Thorndon Hospital
Improvements over the original Colonial Hospital included the provision of ward accommodation for female patients.

The plan shows wards arranged around central service areas and an enclosed yard.

By 1870, however, the hospital was too small (the colony was growing rapidly), and sanitary conditions had deteriorated. The importance of hygiene was just being realised - Lister had published his landmark papers in 1867

So planning for a new, larger and more modern hospital was begun.
