The plan shows wards arranged around central service areas and an enclosed yard.
By 1870, however, the hospital was too small (the colony was growing rapidly), and sanitary conditions had deteriorated. The importance of hygiene was just being realised - Lister had published his landmark papers in 1867
So planning for a new, larger and more modern hospital was begun.
