MB ChB (NZ) 1931, LRCP (Lond) 1933, FRCS (Eng) 1933.
After one year as a house surgeon in NZ, he went to UK where
he worked in Nottingham. He obtained the FRCS (Eng) at the age of 25 in 1933.
He returned to NZ at the end of 1934 to take up the appointment of Resident Surgeon, Wellington Hospital from 1/1/1935.
This post involved him in a wide range of general surgery. From 1940, he undertook a majority of
the paediatric surgery at the hospital.
He undertook the first operation in NZ for patent ductus arteriosus ligation, on 16.05.1944 at Wellington Hospital.
This was on a patient with infective endarteritis, who made a complete recovery.
Six weeks later, he performed the first pericardiectomy in Wellington.
He resigned on 31/5/1946, moving to Auckland. There he worked as a general surgeon and gynaecologist in private practice,
until retiring in 1970.
