Studied in Dublin, Paris and London.
Enlisted in the Army in 1859 as staff assistant and surgeon. In June 1860, he was sent to
NZ, 3 months after the start of the Waitara war. He left the Imperial Army, joining the Colonial Forces, and became
their Surgeon-General.
He left the military in 1865 and set up practice as a medical practitioner in Wellington.

He was
appointed a Member of the Legislative Council in 1870.
Honorary Surgeon, Wellington Hospital 1879 - 1882
Honorary Consulting Surgeon, Wellington Hospital 1883 - 1886.
President, Wellington Branch BMA 1890.
Awarded CMG in 1891
