As early as July 1885, it was proposed to build accommodation for nurses, and plans were drawn up by the Government Architect, Mr Beatson. These were approved by the Hospital Trustees' House Committee on 31/8/1885. Sometime between then and late 1886, it was proposed to include accommodation for paediatric patients in the planned building . Revised plans were sent to the Minister for Public Works on 9/12/1886. There was some delay in getting a response from Government, so the Hospital Trustees sent a deputation to the Premier. On 13/1/1887, a letter was received from the Premier noting that the sum of £1000 already voted for the project would be exceeded by the current building planned, and he asked whether the Trustees would underwrite the excess. The Trustees agreed, provided that they would not be made individually liable, and by 17/3/1887, tenders for the new building were approved. On 19/7/1887, the Trustees received a letter from the Government requesting an extra £500 to complete the Childrens' Ward. Further meetings between the Trustees & Government ensued, with the result that the Government agreed to contribute 50% of this extra amount. Extra funds were raised by the holding of bazaars. Some of this money was used to furnish the Childrens' Ward. The building was completed by June 1888. The House Committee minutes for 4/12/1888 note that ..."table cloths in the Childrens' Ward in use only since June, were now in a dilapidated condition." |
