John Ewart was appointed Medical Superintendent of Wellington Hospital in April, 1889.   He quickly established a reputation for his surgical skills as well as his administrative capacity.

He was also responsible for developing an extremely popular outpatients department, laying the foundation for the strong public hospital-based outpatient service which has continued in Wellington ever since.

John Ewart resigned from Hospital service in 1909.
