Operating Theatre under construction next page return to home page back to previous page

Surgery was originally performed in an operating / casualty room in the entrance block.    By 1897 this had become quite inadequate, and construction of the 1st purpose-built operating block was commenced.

It was placed to the north of the main corridor, between the main entrance block and the paediatric ward / nurses accommodation block.    One of the two original 'private ward suites' was lost in the process.
