Despite the damage done, the hospital continued to function.   In 1849, one year after the earthquake, Dr Fitzgerald was presented with a framed portrait of Queen Victoria.   To celebrate the occasion, a banquet was held in the damaged hospital.   Many Maori chiefs were in attendance.
