Studied medicine at St Thomas's Hospital, London.

Returned to NZ in 1884, joining Dr W E Collins in practice

Honorary Physician, Wellington Hospital 1890 - 1892
Honorary Surgeon, Wellington Hospital 1893 - 1907
Editor, NZMJ 1906 - 1911
Retired in 1907. Returned to England in 1914, and served in the RAMC.
An accomplished painter, he became President of the NZ Academy of Fine Arts
