Joined the Colonial Medical Service, and was posted to Fiji in 1913
At outbreak of WW1, joined the RAMC (2 years), then NZMC, and at war's end, came to NZ.   Initially set up practice in Kaponga, Taranaki, before moving to Lower Hutt.  Set up as a Consulting Physician in Wellington.

Visiting Physician, Wellington Hospital 1940 - 1948

Upon retirement, the J Roberts Boyd Prize in Medicine for final year medical students was established in his honour
