Initially qualified as a pharmaceutical chemist, before travelling to the UK where he studied medicine at
Durham University and the London Hospital Medical School.
Served in France with the NZMC. After the war, he completed his postgraduate surgical studies in
London, and he gained the Edinburgh FRCS.
Commenced surgical practice in Wellington in 1921, and the following year he was made Honorary Visiting Surgeon
Wellington Hospital, a post he held until 1938.
Respected abdominal, gynaecological and thyroid surgeon, and in his later career, developed success in thoracic
surgery, skills he put to good use at the new chest surgery clinic at the Pukeora Sanitorium in Waipukurau.
