How much does it cost?

Charges are different across the district. After hours services are usually cheaper for:

  • people on low incomes
  • people with a Community Services Card (CSC)
  • people with a High User Health Card.
What if I’m not enrolled with a GP, from out of town, or not a New Zealand resident?

You can still go to an after hours service, but you may have to pay a higher fee.

Daytime services

If you can, go and see your doctor during normal hours. If you think it’s urgent, let the receptionist know and ask to be put through to the nurse for advice on what to do.

It’s a good idea to see the same doctor or the same practice each time so you get care from a doctor who knows you.

Extended hours
Some practices offer extended hours. Call your practice to find out whether they offer extended hours.

Enrol with a GP
It’s a good idea to enrol with a GP before you get sick. If you are enrolled your visit will be cheaper than if you’re not.

It’s quick and easy to enrol with a GP, and costs nothing. Enrolment with a GP encourages a strong relationship with the people who look after your health who’ll get to know you and/or your family and be familiar with your health needs.
