Wellington Regional Pain Management Service
The Wellington Region Pain Management service provides a comprehensive evaluation and rehabilitation service. Our emphasis is on pain management rather than medical cure, through the development of effective coping strategies and appropriate use of medication.
Our aim is to facilitate physical and emotional well-being and a return to a healthy and functional role in the community.

- Specialist Nurses
There are different types of pain.
- Acute pain refers to a pain of recent onset or short duration eg after stubbing your toe. Acute pain is a symptom of damage and normally goes away as the injury or illness gets better. This usually takes less than three months.
- Chronic pain refers to any pain persisting for more than three months. The pain is usually no longer a warning of tissue damage. Chronic pain is often a consition in itself rather than a symptom (as in acute pain). Most of our patients have chronic pain.
Access to this service is via a referral from your specialist, GP or health professional.
