Ultrasound

Ultrasound uses high frequency sound waves (unable to be heard by the human ear) and a highly specialised computer to produce an image (picture) of most parts of the body except for the lung, bowel, or bone.

During an Ultrasound a probe is used. This is kept in contact with your skin and moved over the region of interest to acquire diagnostic information. The probe sends information directly to a highly specialised computer system which then processes the data and converts it to pictures and other useful information.

A gel is applied to your skin to allow the probe to remain in good contact and move easily over your skin. The procedure is not painful.

Hours of Operation
Ultrasound provides a 24 hour service for emergency procedures. Normal hours of operation are 8:00am to 4.30 pm Monday to Friday except public holidays.

Location
The Ultrasound suite is located within Radiology on Level D of the Clinical Services Block at Wellington Hospital until November 3. From November 3, it will be located in Level 2 of the new Wellington Regional Hospital.
