CT Scanning

A CT Scan is an x-ray examination using a computer driven scanner to produce cross-sectional images of the head or body. It shows the soft tissues and bones in more detail than an ordinary x-ray.

A CT scan is conducted by an MRT (Medical Radiation Technologist) who is an expert in the use of x-ray equipment. The results of the scan are evaluated by a Radiologist who is a doctor specialising in x-ray diagnosis.

Preparation

  • You will be sent instructions along with your appointment time.
  • If you are taking Metformin (Glucomet, Glucophage or Metomin) do not take this on the morning of, or for 48 hours hours after your procedure. You will be given written information regarding this when you come for your appointment. Please advice your GP that we have asked you to stop taking your Metformin.
  • It is important that you take all your other usual medications.
  • If you have any x-rays at home please bring them with you.
  • You may be required to change into an x-ray gown for your scan – this is to ensure the images obtained are of optimal quality.

The Procedure
It may be necessary to inject a special "dye" (contrast media) into a vein in your arm. This highlights blood vessels and the internal structures. If you need this injection you will be asked to read and sign a consent form after discussion with a nurse, MRT or doctor. Please bring your reading glasses with you. If you have previously had an allergic reaction to the contrast media or if you are breast feeding please inform the Radiology Department prior to your appointment.

Most procedures take less than 30 minutes but allow more time for your entire visit.

Please do not ask the MRT for a result. They are unable to give their opinion. The Radiologist will study your films and a report will be sent to your referring Doctor.

Hours of Operation
Hours of operation are: 8:00am – 6:00 pm Monday to Friday.

Location
The CT Scanner is located in the Radiology Department on Level D of the Clinical Services Block, Wellington Hospital until November 3. From November 3, it will be located in Level 2 of the new Wellington Regional Hospital.
