Professional Information

This section of Wellington Hospital's ICU website provides specialist information for other health professionals including:

Education

Medical and Nursing Education are a strong focus for our service.

Nursing

Education is essential to developing and retaining good nurses. We are committed to providing an extensive educational programme to support staff development within our service, hospital-wide and regionally as a tertiary provider. Many of our staff are also enrolled in other Post-Graduate Education courses from the 2 local Universities.

These include:

  • Orientation
  • Single topic study days
  • Short courses or modules
  • Acute Care programme
  • Postgraduate Professional Courses (Victoria University of Wellington):
    • Postgraduate Certificate in Clinical Nursing
    • Entry to Specialty Practice Paper: Intensive Care
  • Conferences

The Postgraduate Certificate in Clinical Nursing Intensive Care is organised and delivered through Capital & Coast District Health Board Intensive Care and is offered to intensive care nurses nationally through distance centre learning and tutorials. The 10 month programme is accredited at Masters level and affiliated to Victoria University of Wellington. The program provides the students with a challenging yet supportive learning environment.

An education budget for organising specialty specific study days and courses provides the resources to deliver a quality educational programme. Staff have access to textbooks, CD Roms and journals which are purchased on a regular basis to provide effective resources.

We are fortunate to have the National Human Patient Simulation Centre on campus and regularly make use of this to teach airway, ventilation and crisis management.

An educational attendance fund is available to all staff who require financial support with registration fees and expenses for designated study days/short courses/conference attendance. Also available is a separate hospital wide nursing and midwifery study assistance fund.

All staff are encouraged with their professional development through the Clinical Career Pathway and are offered paid education leave for designated study days/short courses/conference attendance.

Medical

All registrar positions are accredited for training with the Joint Faculty of Intensive Care Medicine, the Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists and the Royal Australian College of Physicians.

In house we run a regular weekly teaching session for the junior doctors and support our teaching with our weekly quality assurance sessions. This includes a monthly Trauma presentation, weekly mortality meetings and staff presentations. The hospital and adjacent Medical School combine for a weekly Grand Round presentation which is open to all staff.
