Wellington Hospital’s Blood and Cancer Centre this week received a generous donation of 20 new leather La-Z-Boy chairs from Friends of the Cancer Society – Wellington.
“These chairs are such a fantastic donation and will make a huge difference to the comfort of those who come to us for cancer treatment,” said Paul Smith, Charge Nurse Manager at the Wellington Blood and Cancer Centre.
The Society last year raised $120,000 for the Wellington Regional Cancer Society from their Friends of the Cancer Society Glamour Ball. The funds were split amongst four different projects – one of which provided the new furniture for the centre.
The supply of new chairs is courtesy of John Morgan, owner and CEO of Morgan furniture, Judith Langridge from the Friends of the Cancer Society, and Fiona Pearson and her staff at the Wellington Division of the Cancer Society of New Zealand. It is just one example of the Society’s continued support for the Blood & Cancer Centre.
The existing furniture has been used daily for a number of years and, after being frequently cleaned down with strong detergents, is becoming marked and needs to be replaced.
“When patients are receiving treatment at the Blood and Cancer Centre, they can sometimes have to stay in the same spot for several hours,” Paul Smith says.
“These chairs provide somewhere comfortable to sit, where patients can change position and relieve pressure, making a huge difference to how they experience their treatment.”
