“As Primary Health Organisations (PHOs), we are all working to improve health outcomes for all our enrolled patients. There are a number of groups who currently do not enjoy the same results as the rest of the population and that is especially true for Māori” says Berni Marra, Capital PHO Manager. “Partnership has proven the key to developing this valuable resource. Through this project we were able to pull our resources together, to work smarter and more efficiently to produce a quality resource without duplicating workloads and wasting resources”.
As part of a response to address this challenge, Tumai mo te Iwi PHO and Capital PHO recently released their Tikanga best practice guidelines to all their Medical Centres in the Porirua and Wellington area. “We have also been running training in the Tikanga guidelines which has proved very popular with staff at the Medical Centers,” said Tumai Manager, Ranei Wineera. “The Tikanga Guidelines inform staff at the Medical Centers around some of the key aspects of Māori Culture that is important for them to be aware of, so that inadvertent cultural slip ups do not become barriers to our Māori patients getting the best care”.
Dr Larry Jordan, Chair of Tumai mo te Iwi Board, recognises the value and need for the Tikanga best practice guidelines. Dr Jordan acknowledges that it is another step forward for both organisations to improve service delivery and health outcomes for Māori. “Improving Māori Health outcomes is a priority for all our Medical Centres,” says Dr Jordan, “and the Tikanga best practice guide and the ongoing training & support provided by the PHO teams is a very timely and helpful addition to our work in this regard”.
