Departments begin move into new WRH

The first two clinical support departments have now made the shift into the new Wellington Regional Hospital building.

Ribbon cutting of new radiology departmentRadiology (which includes X-Rays, MRIs and other diagnostic imaging) is up and running in the WRH, and saw its first patients there on 3 November. Sterile Services - who sterilise equipment used in operating theatres and other clinical settings - moved into the new building just a few days later.

Other departments will follow suit in the months ahead - including Outpatients in January, and inpatient wards during the first quarter of 2009.

Relocating departments in a phased manner allows Capital & Coast DHB to continue providing a full range of services on-site at Wellington Hospital throughout the transition from the old facilities to the new ones. It also ensures that any teething problems are identified and fixed before patients move into the new building.

These relocations are a major logistical exercise, involving the relocation of dozens of staff and tonnes of equipment. The two teams who have now shifted celebrated the success of the recent shift in different ways - with a unique cake for radiology staff (see photo at right - Barbie gets an MRI scan), and with a traditional ribbon cutting ceremony for staff in Sterile Services.
