Launch of Pacific Strategic Plan will be just one of the highlights on a very busy day for Pacific Health

This Friday, 17 October, looks set to be a banner day for Pacific Health in this district – with not one, or two, or even three – but four different things to celebrate on the same day.

The Pacific Team at Capital & Coast DHB has decided to combine all four subjects at one public meeting – which they’ve aptly titled the “The Ultimate Launch”.

The Director of Pacific Health for the DHB, Lee Pearce, says the event will serve to celebrate some significant accomplishments for Pacific peoples, and to recognise one of the people who played an instrumental role in progress over recent years.

Launch 1: Pacific Strategic Action Plan

“On Friday we’ll be launching the second edition of our Pacific Strategic Action Plan (2007-2012), which sets out the strategic direction and actions for improving health outcomes for Pacific peoples in our district and reducing inequalities between Pacific and non-Pacific peoples.

“The new plan builds on and addresses the main areas of concern for Pacific peoples – things like the high rate of avoidable hospitalisations, child health in areas such as vision, hearing and oral health, and high child and adult admission rates for respiratory disorders and cellulitis, diabetes related conditions and poor service utilisation.

“It sets three overarching strategic priorities: Child & Youth Health, Primary Care, and Chronic Disease Management/Long Term Conditions. It then looks at how we can address those areas by working with families, with communities, and with government.”

Launch 2: Meet the Pacific Strategic Advisory Group (PSAG)

This Advisory Group, which was established with the Board’s approval in July, will provide the DHB with advice from a Pacific perspective, and commentary on the DHB’s activities and how they affect the health of Pacific people. The Pacific Strategic Advsisory Group will have a Governance role. Each member of the group represents one of the main 7 Pacific Island groups with a Provider representative.

Launch 3: Pacific Footprints Website

The Pacific Footprints Website (which will be at: www.pacificfootprints.co.nz ) will contain information about C&C DHB’s Pacific Directorate, the Pacific Health Unit, Health Pasifika. Each of the Pacific Providers has a webpage within the site.

There will be URL links to all things Pacific and language appropriate. There will also be URL links to government departments, opportunity for feedback, information about activities, events and health information which will include medication. It will also provide updates on how we are doing as a DHB, and as communities.

The launch will provide information on what to look out for, some prevention and promotion messages and where to go for help. The messages on the site will be aligned with Provider messages communicated across radio - Access, SCR and Holla. There will also be an opportunity to ‘have your say’.

Launch 4: An appreciation of Fuimaono Karl Pulotu-Endemann

Karl Pulotu-Endemann served as a board member for C&C DHB during the previous Board term. The Pacific health team have set aside time at the Launch to celebrate his achievements, applaud his ongoing commitment to Pacific Health issues, and farewell him from his role with C&C DHB.
