    First Wellington Hospital (built on land in Pipitea Street that was given for that purpose by local Maori)
  • 1853
    - New hospital built on present site of Wellington Girl’s College
  • 1878
    - Government granted 8 acres of land in Riddiford Street (present site). Building contained Wards 1–4.
  • 1900
    - Main operating theatre opened to commemorate the Jubilee of Queen Victoria
  • 1904
    - Nurses’ Home opened
  • 1910
    - Fever Hospital opened
  • 1912
    - Children’s Hospital opened
  • 1928
    - Main Administration Block opened
  • 1942
    - 210 Block opened
  • 1944
    - Hutt and Silverstream Hospitals opened
  • 1958
    - Paraparaumu Maternity Hospital opened
  • 1965
    - Nurses’ Chapel opened, Kenepuru Maternity Hospital opened
  • 1966
    - Seddon Wing completed
  • 1972
    - Wellington Hospital Board became responsible for the day-to-day administration of Porirua Psychiatric Hospital
  • 1973
    - Psychiatric Unit at Wellington Hospital opened
  • 1977
    - Academic block, Wellington School of Medicine, University of Otago, completed
  • 1978
    - Clinical Services Block completed, Kenepuru Hospital Clinical Services and Ward Block Stage 1 completed, Women’s Hospital (Grace Neill Block) completed
  • 1979
    - Puketiro Centre opened on the Kenepuru campus providing services for children with physical, mental and behavioural problems
  • 1980
    - Wellington Hospital’s Link and Ward Support Blocks completed
  • 1981
    - St Helen’s Maternity Hospital decommissioned
  • 1987
    - Staff Residence 3 on the Wellington campus demolished
  • 1989
    - Wards 1 and 2 at Wellington Hospital earthquake strengthened
  • 1991
    - New PABX telephone system introduced
  • 1993
    - Crown Health Enterprise Capital Coast Health created to administer Wellington, Kenepuru and Paraparaumu Hospitals. Hutt Hospital administered by Hutt Valley Health
  • 1996
    - Psychiatric Unit, Te Whare O Rangituhi, opened at Kenepuru Hospital
    Ward 27, Matairangi (Psychiatric Unit) Wellington Hospital upgraded
    - Old boiler house and Seddon Block on Wellington campus demolished and replaced by the lower Seddon carpark
    - New laundry opened
  • 1997
    - Margaret Stewart House opened as a residential facility for families and patients undergoing oncology and renal treatment
  • 1998
    - New Maternity Unit at Kenepuru Hospital opened and theatres upgraded,
    - New kitchen at Wellington opened,
    - Laboratory services reconfigured,
    - New Pharmacy at Wellington
  • 1999
    - New cafeteria opened at Wellington Hospital
  • 2000
    - Planning for new Regional Hospital on the Wellington campus began
    New Emergency Department built and opened at Wellington Hospital
  • 2002
    - Government funding approval granted for a $303m hospital redevelopment project, which will incorporate substantial upgrading of existing facilities and construction of significant new facilities at Wellington, Kenepuru and Paraparaumu. Project to be completed by 2008
  • 2003
    - A new one-stop shop facility called the Kapiti Health Centre was built and opened at Paraparaumu
  • 2004
    - Demolition of 210 and Front Block. Work began on new Oncology building.
  • 2005
    - Construction completed on Wellington Blood & Cancer Centre, Short Stay Unit and Stage 1 Kenepuru Community Hospital. Kenepuru's Accident & Medical Clinic opened.
